How do I register a birth?
You must register a baby within 42 days (6 weeks) of their birth. In Newcastle upon Tyne, you can do this at:
The Registration Office, Civic Centre, Newcastle upon Tyne, NE1 8PS
Contact: 0191 211 5091 or registrars@newcastle.gov.uk
Opening hours: Monday to Friday, 8.30am – 4.15pm
If you are married, either parent can register the birth.
If you are unmarried, you must register the birth together in order for the father to be granted Parental Responsibility (PR).
If you marry in the future, it is a legal responsibility that the birth is re-registered.
Newcastle City Council operates a drop in service for birth registration. It also operates a “Tell us Once” system which allows birth information to be passed to several relevant agencies at one time. This can include fast tracking of child benefit claims.
